Final Cut, Avid and Adobe Premiere have a new editing competitor

By Robin Rowe

HOLLYWOOD, CA ( 2013/12/7 – Lightworks is the editing system used by Martin Scorsese’s editor Thelma Schoonmaker. In fact, she was practically the only user Lightworks had for some time. Old-timers will recall that Lightworks was the most popular editing system for pro editors back in the day, until Avid came along and Lightworks faded from memory. Lightworks is back with a new version that has a lot of great features. Time to join the Lightworks Windows beta program or Lightworks Linux beta program. A Mac version has been promised for future.

Your first step in learning Lightworks will be to watch the tutorial videos. Experienced editors will want to watch videos #6 through #9.You will also want to watch the video on editing with images, how to handle titles (which doesn’t work yet so you must workaround) and how to export or back-up a Lightworks project. If you’re an experience editor, after watching these videos you should be able to use Lightworks for your own projects. For those who need a bit more help, Lightworks offers a free intro webinar.

It’s still a beta and the title tool is missing, but Lightworks is good enough right now to start using.

Video Tutorial Highlights

From #6, hotkeys:

  • B: Replace
  • V: Insert
  • X: Delete
  • Z: Remove

From #7, three ways to unjoin for trimming:

  • Click to left of cut unjoins out-edit. Viewer window doubles to show both sides of cut. Use play or nudge to roll edit forward. When done, click on Join button or on each track. You must unjoin all tracks to keep sync.
  • Drag edit point.
  • Rolling: unjoin both ends. Aligh, unjoin video group, join.

Note that track zoom bar is on top, not on the bottom like Final Cut. Audio monitoring on cut is relative to clip where the head is.

From Video #8, effects are under the Effects button. Mark i/o form dissolve. Do same for audio cross-fade. Chosse Video from Black effect to fade up. Same for audio with Fade Up.

From Video #9, right-click bottom edge of track to enlarge. In timeline menu, set Audio Levels to Yes to turn on waveforms. Under Advanced, move mouse wheel to adjust levels.

Adding Music

  • Timeline viewer Add Track
  • Mark source
  • Mark and park timeline
  • Deselect all tracks (button to left above tracks)
  • Replace

Nodes ar like the Final Cut audio pen tool. Right-click on yellow audio level line four times to create four points. Right-mouse to drag level down.

Not from the video…

Project files are in C;/users/public/documents and can’t be anywhere else. However, you can export project. Use the same dialogs as you would to export video, but set to export project.

To add an image layer, do Effects, video, layer, add.

There’s no Razor tool. To razor a track, press Mark, then Delete. Creates a zero-frame edit.
